Human Relationships Will Always Be PR's Greatest Competitive Advantage in the Age of AI
Last week, a colleague received a call from a journalist they'd known for over a decade, before the story went live.
Not to ask for a quote.
Just to check if they were okay with the angle. No press release got them that call. No AI tool built that trust.
Years of simply keeping in touch did.
Here's what we've been thinking about a lot lately: as content becomes easier to produce, the one thing that cannot be automated is the relationship between two people.
We've always believed that the best PR happens before the brief lands on your desk. It happens over chai at a conference, over a late reply to a journalist's random question on a Sunday, over remembering that a reporter just had a baby and sending a congratulatory note that has nothing to do with work.
That's not a strategy.
That's just being a decent human being.
And somehow, in 2026, being a decent human being has become a competitive advantage.
Reporters are drowning in AI-generated pitches. Hundreds a day, all perfectly worded, all saying nothing. What cuts through is a name they recognise. A voice they trust. A person they actually want to hear from.
At K2 Communications , we've always believed that great communications begin with great relationships. We remember the little things: who just switched beats, who prefers WhatsApp over email, who needs the data first and the story later. Not because it's a checklist or a PR tactic, but because meaningful relationships are built through consistency, empathy, and trust.
And here's what we've realised: that approach is now worth more than ever.
The media relationships built over the years with editors, journalists, anchors, analysts, and industry stakeholders don't exist in any CRM or database. They live in conversations, in memory, and in mutual respect.
No tool can scrape that.
This isn't an argument against AI.

Far from it.
AI is transforming communications for the better. It helps us research faster, write smarter, analyse better, and deliver more value to clients.
But AI should amplify relationships, not replace them.
If you're in communications, this is your moment.
Not to resist AI, use it absolutely.
But double down on the part of your job that no algorithm can touch.
Pick up the phone.
Remember the birthdays.
Reply when there's nothing to gain.
Show up when there's no agenda.
The coffee meeting everyone keeps cancelling.
Book it.
Because in an industry built on credibility, trust will always travel further than technology.
And that's a competitive advantage no algorithm can replicate.
