PR in the startup growth journey

A few years ago, a startup's PR strategy was simple: raise a large round, put out a press release, get some inches in the paper, and call it visibility.
That playbook doesn't work anymore. And if you're a founder still running it, it's worth pausing to ask why.
Here's what's changed.
Funding headlines don't build trust the way they used to. Indian startups are increasingly choosing profitability and runway discipline over aggressive fundraising, and capital discipline is now seen as a strength rather than a slowdown. Which means a "we raised $10M" story alone doesn't carry the weight it once did. Investors, customers, and even future employees are asking a tougher question: what is this company actually building, and will it last?
PR is becoming a data and AI-informed function, not a guessing game. PR teams are now using AI-driven media monitoring and sentiment analysis to understand what audiences genuinely want to hear, instead of pushing generic narratives out and hoping something sticks. For a startup, that means your story needs to be sharper and more specific, not louder.
Reach is no longer only about scale, it's about relevance. Startups are finding real traction with micro-influencers and regional, video-first storytelling — a more affordable and often more credible route than chasing big celebrity endorsements. For India especially, where tier-2 and tier-3 cities are seeing rapid digital growth, this regional, local-language storytelling isn't a nice-to-have. It's where a large part of your next customer base actually lives.

Substance is starting to outrank spectacle. Many founders are realising that solving a real, boring problem consistently earns more long-term trust than a flashy campaign ever will. The startups built on practical thinking are the ones still standing when the noise dies down.
So if you're a founder building your PR strategy for the next phase of growth, here's my honest take: don't start with "how do we get attention." Start with "what is true about us that's worth telling." Then find the right voice, the right platform, and yes, sometimes the right AI tool to tell it well.
Attention fades. Trust compounds. Build for the second one.
